Market Estate Project

2010-03-08 16:38 by Alys Williams

market estate

I will be 1 of 75 artists creating and presenting art work on Market Estate: a soon to be demolished 1960's housing estate in north London. Explore the Market Estate Project, just before the demolition bulldozers move in, on Saturday 6th March 2010 between 2-10pm.

Flat 62 is a site-specific installation combining video, objects, text and sound. By stripping back areas of the abandoned flat and preserving other fragments of the domestic interior, the viewer is offered moments from its inhabited past. I construct narrative through combined media - building a patchwork of scenes with a ghostly presence - and invite visitors to explore the site and piece together my protagonist's story.

SQUARE GALLERY launches in Bristol with an exhibition including work by Alys Williams

2009-10-27 12:41 by Alys Williams

Exhibition runs 1 October – 15 January (Private view 7pm, 30th September)

15 Berkeley Square, Clifton, Bristol

The 30th September sees the Square Gallery unveiled. This uniquely creative space is set to redefine Bristol’s flourishing art scene and a private view of the Autumn exhibition will certainly get the exhibition off to an exciting start. The ultra-modern collection of work on shown reflects the ethos of the gallery; forward thinking artists will be given space to explore ideas using unusual media, creating works that are both intelligent and innovative.

The Autumn exhibition is curated by Catherine Raspail in conjunction with Open and features work by four cutting edge artists - Alys Williams, Johnny de Mearns and Bristol artists Andy Stott and Zanny Mellor.  Open will be showing video paintings by artist in residence Alys Williams. In 8 Moments, a series of eight video studies originally commissioned as part of a playful site specific installation in the Truman Brewery, London, Williams explores the relationship between the present and the recorded. Inside Out comprises of thirty six studies and this collection examines the textured layering of the natural and built environment through the notion of the journey.

For further information on the exhibition view the Square Gallery website and for more on Alys Williams see her Open gallery Artists page.

In-Residence Maison du Barban, August 2009

2009-07-27 12:36 by Alys Williams

In August 2009, I will be working on a self-initiated residency, based throughout the month at the 17th century house Maison du Barban in Les Apilles region of the south of France. Built by wealthy farmer and landowner Pierre Clapier, the extrodinary house and surrounding area will become a focus of my study and exploration, manifesting themselves into site-responsive installations, video works and works on paper.

I intend to use the time and space to focus on my research, writing, drawing and filming in an environment away from city life. My objective outcome of the residency is a new body of site-responsive work, which will include a journal recording this process.

UN:PLACE Exhibition at the Jerwood Space

2009-05-15 00:00 by Alys Williams

An exhibition of personal cartographies and  urban responses.

Alys Williams / Benjamin Bailey / Seecum Cheung / Ilona Sagar / Dana Macpherson / Inzajeano Latif.

Exhibition: Wednesday 3 June – Monday 20 July.
Private view: June 5 th 5.30 to 7.30.
Open: Monday – Friday 9 – 5pm, Saturday 11 – 3pm

Jerwood Cafe Space

Un: Place is the first group show in the Café space, guest-curated by Beatrice Jarvis. Six artists have each created a
piece of work that responds directly to the landscape of Jerwood Space, an iconic building situated in the heart of
bustling Bankside. This reclaimed area between London Bridge and Waterloo is steeped in fragmented traces of
lingering history, where passages of time are lost in hidden corners and marked histories are glimpsed on decaying
facades. Once again though, it is an area of dynamic interaction and cultural interchange, exemplified by these six
emerging artists communicating their response to the city landscape.

Alys Williams exhibits the site-specific Collage/Installation A Passage in an Urban Jigsaw 2009.

UN:PLACE SEMINAR

A free urban seminar will accompany this exhibition on Wednesday 10 June 10am to 6pm. This day-long workshop explores the nature of the city as creative stimulus. Alys Williams will be among a group of artists, designers and acedemics to speak in the morning seminar and lead a workshop in the afternoon.

A site-responsive installation, created for (and within) the Red Room by Multimedia Artist Alys Williams with Musician/Performer David Matthews, combines video, spoken word, reformed melody and sampled sounds. Fragmented layers of conversation built around a sculptural formation will occupy the unique vaulted space, responding to its architecture and character.

My Site | in Space 4

2008-11-22 15:00 by Alys Williams

alys in my site

Alys Williams works with Switch Performance for My Site | in Space 4, for which she has created and exhibits a new work (De)Construction.  My Site | in Space is a series of site-specific performance events showcased on Sat 21st and Sun 22nd November 2008 curated by Switch Performance. A group of artists work under time pressure to create performance in response to a space. Each event is ephemeral: created in a flash, never to be performed again. The fourth version of my site | in space took place at Resistance Gallery, a double-height railway arch in Bethnal Green described by Time Out as a "white-hot East End venue".

The artists involved are: Nelly Alfandari | Luke Allder & Jon Francis | Justin Allen | Julie Brixey-Williams | Katharine Fry | Yoko Ishiguro | Beatrice Jarvis | Emily Orley & Katja Hilevaara | SKIPtheatre | Kym Ward | Alys Williams
