From, To and Back Again

The Installation presents a journey in three media; video, photography and written word; Elements that emerge from a bag, which acts as their container/collector.  A video screen embedded at the base of the bag presents a visual route through the city with scenes combining dance, un-choreographed movement and cityscapes in a playful montage.  The same journey is presented in text: automatic writing written by the artist as she wanders the city streets.  A fragmented narrative appears in the video, the polaroid photographs, of houses which lay next to it, and the text that lines the walls.  At one point, a strip of text peals away from the painted surface, creating a trail back to the bag at the center.

From, To and Back Again experiments with modes of reading and writing narrative and of creating literary imagery.  The parallel worlds of the text and video collide and retreat, offering the viewer a network of clues to the entire story.  It is a site-responsive work, developed for the library at The Hospital Club and evolved on-site.  It takes on suggestions from the architecture and encompasses the furniture that already inhabits the space whilst projecting a view of the city from outside.

"Having developed a body of work that explored 'The City' in foreign lands, I wanted to revisit (or re-trace) my past as a passage through my home city London; A route marked by the houses that I once inhabited and called home." alys
