ON-SITE|UN-SCRIPTED multimedia installation 2008

(Dis)arranged chairs...fragments of a human image...samples of sound and broken conversation.... echo within the vault...

This is site-responsive installation, created for (and within) the Red Room at Shunt Vaults in London Bridge by Multimedia Artist Alys Williams with Musician/Performer David Matthews.  The piece combines video, spoken word, reformed melody and sampled sounds. Fragmented layers of conversation built around a sculptural formation occupied the unique vaulted space, responding to its architecture and character.

The composer/performers spent time within Shunt Vaults creating a live stream of consciousness / automatic conversation that was fragmented, edited, mixed and re-formed into a 27 minute sound and video scape juxtaposed against an arrangement of chairs.  The performers inhabit the assemblage in voice and as traces of memory, whilst the viewer is invited inside to watch as narratives unravel.

In On-Site|Un-Scripted Alys Williams further explores methods of site-responsive practise within a fascinating environment and she collates a curious 3-dimensional audiovisual montage.

Running time 27 minutes (on loop). Photo-documentation by Beth Elliott.

"a highly controlled aesthetic manifested through an organic integration of found objects, video, and sound. All these elements were encompassed in a proverbial tower of Babel constructed of diverse chairs that seemed to plunge upward as a cloud of dust."
